Kirk Schriefer spent many hours sitting in the Angel Inn, crafting a story
about relationships and romance, picturing scenes in the bar, the band
in the corner, a table overturned in a fight scene, a character smoking
his cigarette watching the action.
The local script writer is making a movie in Niagara-on-the-Lake that
actually features the photographic town, which has been the location
of many well-known movies - the difference will be that in his movie,
it will be called Niagara-on-the-Lake.
While it is a fictional story that just happens to be set in a real life pub,
"people may watch it and recognize themselves," says Schriefer. "It would
be difficult to get away from that."
With a Master's degree in film, he has a completed script, and is
receiving lots of support from local businesses and friends, including the
new owner of the Angel inn, where the movie will be filmed.
Schriefer has a casting director just waiting to be told the money is in
the back so she can go ahead and hire the actors, and a production
crew willing to come from Toronto for a three-week shoot.
The stumbling block is the budget, with lots of people wanting to help
but nobody coming forward offering a big chunk of the backing, says
Schriefer.
"I don't know any millionnaries, and those who are millionnaires got that
way by holding on to their money."
Schriefer is launching a "Film by the
Foot" campaign to help raise funds for the production of the film, giving
everyday movie-lovers a chance to sponsor a foot of film for $45. A
typical 90-minute film has about 10,000 feet, explains Schriefer.
This way, movie-lovers can sponsor a local movie, made by a local
filmmaker, without having to come up with thousands of dollars.
Once the budget is in place, the shooting will be done from midnight to
8 am at the Angel, while the pub is closed and in locations around town
such as the gazebo, the Niagara River Parkway and the Commons.
